Training Description
In the United States, 55% of women living with HIV have experienced domestic violence. DV and HIV advocates can play an important role in helping domestic violence survivors living with HIV access supportive services from in their community. This workshop will provide information on HIV, domestic violence, best practices for working with survivors living with HIV, and confidentiality. Attendees will also learn about building partnerships and trauma-informed care.

Victims of domestic violence are at an increased risk for acquiring HIV, and women living with HIV experience domestic violence at rates higher than the general population. (Campbell JC, Soeken K. 1999; Machtinger 2012) In the United States, 55% of women living with HIV have experienced domestic violence. (Machtinger, 2012) This experience can decrease the survivor’s overall health, interrupt the effectiveness of medications, and increase the chance of developing an AIDS-related illness or condition. One study from the University of California, San Francisco conducted by Dr. Edward Machtinger showed that women, cisgender and transgender, who were living with HIV and experiencing domestic violence had much higher rates of antiretroviral failure than women living with HIV that were not experiencing domestic violence.
